May 22 Nottoway Patrol

Spirit of Moonpie and I spent the 22nd through the 24th on the Nottoway below Hercules.   The water was stained, low and 73 degrees.  Air temps ranged from 51 to 85.  This was the last land based patrol until fall for sure.  The Skeeters on this trip bout ate us up and the no-shoulders where everywhere.  Trash was very light except at the boat ramp pier where there were several people fishing Saturday.  They trashed the pier area with their beer bottles, food wrappers and worm containers.  It’s another situation where a few idiots are going to ruin it for the rest of the public.  The fishing on this trip was outstanding.  I caught 9 different species of fish including, bass, chain pickerel, bowfin, bream, red throat, mud-gapper, shell cracker, yellow perch and speckle.  All caught on a jointed Rapala. I caught like 20 small bass and I have never caught so many shell crackers fishing like that.  It’s a good thing shell crackers do not get to weigh like 4 pounds or you would not be able to land them.  That is one strong fish!  So I heartedly recommend you get out and GO FISH! Soon before it gets too hot. I also met a lot of nice folks on the river this trip. I thought it was odd that most I met were from out of town.  But it was nice to see others learning about how nice our rivers are and except for the boat ramp they all remarked how clean the Nottoway was.  The wildlife on this trip was bountiful also. I saw quit a plethora of different species and was able to get some excellent film footage. I even filmed this big old snapping turtle that was lying on a log catching some rays.  Normally they do not let me get very close, but on this day we pulled up right beside the 30-pound turtle.  Moonpie said” whew! That is one ugly critter.  Amazingly the old turtle turned and looked at Moonpie and exclaimed in a muddy voice “ hey gray face, your no doll baby either!”  and with that and before Moonpie could get the gun, the big old turtle slid into the tea colored Nottoway.  Moonpie said,  dang, I hope taking a picture of that ghastly monster does not break your camera”. “ Well I replied, I guess that old feller just has one of those faces only a mother could love out here on the two rivers we call the Nottoway and Blackwater.”
