April 22, 2009

The ninth annual Clean Rivers Day (CRD) sponsored by the Blackwater Nottoway Riverkeepers was held on Saturday April the 18th. I am very happy to report it was a great success. We had 109 people who care about our local environment come out and participate in the clean up. Those 109 people picked up 5,060 pounds of trash, tires and other garbage out of our ditches, streams and rivers.

A Farewell To Lon Marks

16 Mar
March 16, 2009

Today Monday the 16th of March 2009 they buried a true champion of our rivers. More specifically the Nottoway River. Lon Marks truly loved that river but what he really loved was taking kids out on it and showing them what a great wonder it is. He would get friends and family to acquisition johnboats, kayaks and canoes and then take a whole classroom out for a float trip down the Nottoway. I hope they remember those trips and the man that tried to open their eyes to mother nature at that young age. Lon Marks received our first Conservationist of the Year Award in 2002 for his efforts at getting children interested in our great natural resources. I was told he was very proud of that award. I was very proud to have known the man. Now I take children out on the river in hopes they will see the same things Lon Marks and I have seen. I hope they will love, cherish and respect what Lon loved and what I love. Mother Nature

November 2000 Richmond Times Article

26 Feb
February 26, 2009

I am posting this article again because it is amazing at how far the BNRP has come since 2000. Equipment is better, we are known statewide as an honest and knowlegable organization, our membership is outstanding and I could go on and on. I also noticed that our parent organization the Waterkeeper Alliance at that time had only 56 KEEPER programs and now there is like 156. Another thing I thought was interesting was the fact the BNRP had not yet started receiving funding.

Blue Catfish Study Underway

30 Jul
July 30, 2008

Well now this is a bit different fishing report than I normally do but I though it an interesting story. On July 30th I accompanied VDGIF Fisheries Biologist Eric Brittle, Scott Herrmann, Mitchell Norman, Regional Manager Bob Greenlee and Fisheries Technician Senior Matt Blommell on the Nottoway River. The mission was to see how many Blue Catfish could be shocked up as part of an on-going study of the species and their ever increasing numbers in the Blackwater and Nottoway.
